Symbol of the landmark restaurant and tavern in Vineyard Haven, the Black Dog was immortalized by the black puppy belonging to Captain Robert Douglas who had named his dog for the canine character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island." Captain Douglas founded the tavern in 1971, fulfilling his dream of living on Martha’s Vineyard and his quest for a year-round restaurant in Vineyard Haven.
