There are approximately 1,800 species of starfish, or sea stars, living in the world’s oceans. Ranging in color from fiery orange to deep blue, many species can live up to ten years and regenerate lost limbs. Many are familiar with the story of a boy rescuing starfish from the beach and throwing them back into the sea, when told that his efforts wouldn’t matter, he replied, “it matters for the ones I save."
