The grand opening of the historic Harbor View Hotel in 1891 was by invitation only and featured Chinese lanterns, a quartet and dancing until late in the night. The building of the North Water Street shingle style hotel that overlooked the harbor marked the shift of the Vineyard from a whaling to a resort community. It remains a grand landmark in Edgartown looking upon the Edgartown Lighthouse and amongst the historic whaling captain’s houses.
