Island Home was originally the name of the side-wheel steamer vessel offering ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in the late 1800’s. As of March 2007, Island Home is the fastest of the current Steamship Authority fleet with two diesel engines, 1200 passenger capacity and a large freight deck with two hydraulic lift decks that allow for extra vehicles. If you’ve ever taken the ferry to or from Martha’s Vineyard, there’s a good chance you’ve ridden aboard the Island Home.
