For years the Steamship Authority operated this 201-foot ferry between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard. In 2005 the Islander was replaced by the Island Home. It seemed the Islander would have to be sold for scrap metal and parts, and many Vineyard residents and visitors were mourning the loss of a piece of Island history. However there seemed to be a reprieve for the Islander in 2007, when the state of New York purchased the vessel for Governor’s Island Preservation and Education Corporation. Unfortunately the ship was too damaged and the GIPEC later sold the boat on ebay.
