This small edible mollusk is now abundant along the shores of New England but was first introduced to American waters by accident in the mid-19th century, brought over as part of ship’s ballast load. Most shells have six to seven whorls and a pattern of white and brown with a milk chocolate colored interior. Periwinkles live singly or in clusters in tide pools or on the larger rocks along the shoreline. All of our island shell charms are cast from actual shells found on the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. We found this shell on Menemsha Beach.
