Commonly referred to as wampum, a smoothly rounded quahog shell disk is joined by nylon cord in a wide array of color choices. Our hand-crafted shell, in shades of purple and white, comes from quahog shells gathered along Martha’s Vineyard beaches. Native Americans in New England called it “wampumpeag,” or wampum referring to the traditional shell beads that have been used for centuries as adornment, as a form of currency, and for ceremonial purposes.
