These flat burrowing sea urchins are also called sea cookies and have rigid skeletons covered when the urchin is alive with small spines and cilia. The spines enable the urchins to move and can be many colors from green to blue to purple, but once the animal dies the skeleton is usually bleached white. Folklore was that sand dollars were the lost coins of mermaids.
